Few individuals are sophisticated enough to read their logs and understand what they mean. Even with the help of expensive log analysis programs people can be lulled into believing they are looking at definitive stats for their site. But the sad fact is that logs are deceiving and that no two log programs are the same.
Why it is so hard? First, let's tackle the biggest elephant in the room, what is a visit? In the simplest terms, a visit is when an individual person visits your site. But beyond that simple definition there is no agreement as to what a visit actually means. Consider:
- Cookies. Some sites use cookies. Some sites don't. Cookies help identify when the same user comes back on the same computer with the same browser. That's good. But sometimes people use multiple browsers and multiple computers... I know I do. Cookies don't help there.
- Log-ins. Some sites require their visitors to log-in. This is a great way to track visitors, but few sites actually require users to log in each time they visit.
- Repeat visits. What if the person goes away then comes back? Is that 1 visit or 2? What if the person gets up for a cup of coffee and comes back 15 minutes later? What if that person comes back 5 times in a day? There is little agreement as to what constitutes a visit in these cases. How does your log program count them?
- What if that person comes back with a different IP address or logs in as a different user?
- Crawlers? The Web is littered with crawlers. Sometimes the vast majority of pageviews on Alexa come from crawlers. Does your log program recognize them and remove them?
- Raw Logs vs. Web Bugs. Do you analyze your raw Web Server logs or do you have some embedded javascript bug on your page that logs the visits with a 3rd party service? The differences between those two methods can be vast. If you are curious, try both and you'll see.
- Fraud. It is easy to create fraudulent visits and pageviews in logs. Unfortunately, it can also be very profitable -- planning to sell a domain or trying to increase click-throughs? Just start clicking around. Clear your cookies and do it again. Go to a different computer and do it again. It ALL shows up in the logs.
This is where a panel, like Alexa, can be a useful solution. Here's why:
- We count all sites the same. A visit is a visit is a visit. Did you get up to get coffee or come back to the site 20 times? No big whoop. We count a max of one visit per user per 24 hours.
- Cookies, log-ins, different IP addresses, etc... All are counted in the same way, regardless of how the site is set up. Alexa identifies unique visits made by individual visitors.
- Crawlers? What crawlers? All Alexa visits are made by humans with toolbars installed into their browsers. Crawlers are simply not part of the equation.
- Fraud. Despite some dubious claims to the contrary (Jason) it is next to impossible to generate fraudulent traffic on Alexa. We've spent years working on this problem and can guarantee you this: The visits counted on Alexa are much less likely to be influenced by fraud than a site's own logs.
If you would like to join Alexa's panel so that your visits are counted too, install the Alexa Toolbar and distribute it to your users. The Web's very first toolbar is still the best and getting better all the time.

You raise a number of great points about logs and log analysis. It is definitely important to compare apples with apples, and that is not always the case with subjective first-party analytics tools.
However, you raise an equally important point when you said:
"It isn't perfect, but provided that your site is adequately represented in our panel, it is often better than your own logs."
The question is how can the public know that a site is "adequately represented," and how is this phrase defined by Alexa?
This is a difficult question to answer unless the independent third-party party, in this case, Alexa, publishes the methodology used to calculate the traffic numbers, and the details about how that data is gathered.
At the very least, Alexa should publish guidance as to the number of installed toolbars and the breakdown of platforms on which those toolbars are installed.
Even better, the public should be given guidance as to how Alexa calculates a page view, performs duplicate removal and URL canonicalization, and accounts for the ever increasing number of AJAX requests.
So while the community may agree that unverifiable first-party log analysis is problematic, there needs to be a way to verify that any given third-party is better.
This problem isn't unique to Alexa of course, but one presumes that Alexa and Alexa's credibility would only stand to gain by increased disclosure.
I'm sure the claims that Alexa's numbers aren't viable are very frustrating to you guys. I know how hard everyone is working there. That said, those claims will persist until either the Alexa traffic numbers tightly correlate with other third parties (unlikely, for all the reasons you allude to) or there is increased transparency into the methodology, and people can decide for themselves how much they agree with the Alexa approach.
From my observation, many people have been misunderstanding Alexa graph without noticing that its numbers are all "ratio". You can not tell that Alexa number has advantages if you do not disclose how many total panels exists, and how many you assume the total internet users is. Otherwise it is not possible to get real traffic trends.
Also, unbalance of panel numbers among countries makes your stats unusable. Because most website owners do not care how they are successful in the world, but care how in their local market. For this, it is needed that how your panel are consist by countries.
I personally like the concept of Alexa than server side logging, but Alexa seems losing its reputation about accuracy gradually.

As others have pointed out, Alexa toolbars are more popular with the SEO community than the general public, so there is an inherit bias in Alexa's data which should be noted.
The question I want to raise is, "In what ways does Alexa collect web data better than Google? How does Alexa compare hand in hand with Google Analytics?"
To use Google Analytics, Google doesn't require downloading their toolbar to get accurate results. As with Alexa, Mack says, "If you would like to join Alexa's panel so that your visits are counted too, install the Alexa Toolbar and distribute it to your users. The Web's very first toolbar is still the best and getting better all the time.".
I wrote a post about Alexa as I have some concerns as to how Alexa collects their data.
Interesting editorial yet the author fails to mention Alexa is NOT compatible with the current two most popular web browsers:
IE 7.0
Firefox
62.2% of our monthly visitors (according to analytics) use either FireFox or IE7
This explains why many popular websites rankings have substantially gone down over the past year while their traffic reports show they are getting more popular.
Hey Clint,
"*System Requirements: Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer See the alternatives for Firefox users."
Yet, I think the issue for me is Windows Vista. I had IE7 and Alexa Toolbar installed on my XP system just fine. But, now that I have Windows Vista and IE7 the toolbar doesn't seem to install correctly. I tried creating a custom toolbar as well as installing the standard one, neither work for me. I haven't tried Firefox yet.
Anyone else having problems?
Here is my problem with Alexa. Running a webcomics site, a large majority of my visitor use Firefox.
I have in the past experimented. I loaded a Alexa toolbar on 3 seperate computers with seperate IP's. I went to my site every day with them. My site went up as high as 19,000.
I stopped doing it, the site dropped down to around 980,000.
Now, becuase it helps my "relevancy", I use one that I visit everyday, and my site is back up pushing 100,000.
Alexa is BS.
What if I don't have an alexa toolbar? My visit to the site is not counted right. There must be millions of people who do not have alexa toolbars installed and if that million people visit a site everyday then it's not increasing the alexa traffic rank of the site. Alexa traffic rank only helps us to analyze the number of visits from a huge number of people but not all the people in the world.
Squidoo.com is like 900 on alexa but only a few thousand people use the site....they all happen to be webmasters though who use alexa to gauge traffic....alexa is truly BS
Its a great way to see a completely inaccurate picture of a sites traffic, traffic trend and comparison of traffic to another site. Saty away from it. Use trafficranking.com
I think you guys are missing the point. Is it possible to manipulate your rank? Sure, you can sit with three browsers and click all day, but if that creates more traffic for you than actually running your web site, then your web site is in trouble. You can't sustain the trickery. It's not the magic number of truth. No one purports it to be that. It's a relative ranking that supports your ability to show delivered page views, and ad views, and customers, via a third party. It's one of a series of things you can use to validate your traffic. And "faking it" won't provide any of the other metrics you need to validate your ranking. Could I get a false ranking top 50,000 by clicking my own web site all day? Sure. But will my sponsors see value after a month or two or three? In my experience, it's much easier just to make great content and have 20,000 user sessions a day and remind people a couple of times a week to download the toolbar. Further, the people who do download it, visit all your competitiors sites, too, and it really strengthens the overall accuracy of your entire sector, not just the one site that advocates downloading the toolbar.
Ok then, I run a fairly popular website, average 20,000 visitors weekly, most of my visitors are artists, and use firefox. Most of them feel the alexa toolbar is spyware even if they cold download.
I falsely keep my alexa ranking up to do the following:
Have a added number for advertisers to pay me more money
Keep my wikipedia enttries as the Wikinazis feel Alexa is the end all and be all of "relevance".
I'd first look at the Alexa/Firefox plug in, it's pretty unobtrusive. Secondly, my site has a lot of students/Firefox users, too. We reiterate periodically that it supports the community in general to download the bar/plugin, and our users are loyal enough to have that override spywarenoia. Again it's not perfect. A lot of our users visit 3 or 4 times a day, and Alexa only counts them once. But again, what's true for us/you is also generally true for our/your competitors, so if you have mostly Firefox users, so will your direct competition, and the relative rankings are still useful. I wouldn't get too caught up in trying to fake your number. Find multiple metrics that help support your stats, Alexa rank is only part of the package. I can't believe that "faking" your ranking is ever more productive than building your site traffic.
I don't demand anyone to download a toolbar, personally I hate toolbars, and don't ask anyone to use them.
I fake it for 2 reasons as stated above.
1. I use an ad broker, and that is one of their measurement stats
2. The WikiNazi's make extensive use of Alexa rank, and it help me keep my wiki entries as "relevant".
All I can say is that I think Alexa's data is flawed, I personally know that my data is right and Alexa makes my site look unpopular but I can assure you awstats and webalizer between the two give much better stats, it's so reliant on toolbars and most people avoid that these days, get with the program!
congrats on your new interface of alexa...love it so much..

I am pretty sure, neither Alexa nor any log analysis shows you the right no. of visitors to your site. What about the pcs in uni. 20 students will use the same pc and can visit your site the same day. Your log will count all 20s while Alexa will count only once visit. It´s funny.
In the past month, the traffic on our site has skyrocketed, yet it is not reflected AT ALL on our Alexa ranking, nor on the traffic graph, which shows a slight bump and not the SPIKE we are getting. And it is a sustained spike. Moreover, the thumbnail of our home page hasn't been updated in months, despite our telling Alexa to update it. We can only deduce that Alexa is a big joke.
I have been told that the data Alexa gets is from people who are using the tool bar. When they visit a site alexa loggs it.
So it may not give a complete cross section of visitor to all sites (in all categories).
So a site that involves SEO for example, will attract more people that are into Alexa and other page rank type of info. As opposed to a Womans health site who visitor ost likely are not the least bit interested in PR or have any knowledge of Alex, and so this type of site will tend have a lower ranking.
Of course I am generalisin here and there are many exceptinos to this brad statment.
Soem other sites will get good rank because they get a lot of traffic through paid advertising.
Kev
So many visitors are from companies that would never allow the Alexa toolbar be installed on their systems. I look forward to the day when Alexa's claims of accuracy are scrutinized under a legal microscope.
Not the slightest bit interested in Alexa rankings here. A maximum of 68% of my visitors are on IE, and a lot of those are on IE7, so I have zero confidence in Alexa being accurate.
Does anyone who is serious about their website still use server stats anyway? No one I talk to thinks they are any more accurate than Alexa and they use Mint or Google or similar.
I was just wondering if autosurfs really improve ranking. I do care about alexa ranking, as my market is somewhat competitive. I think the rank matters more in fields targeted towards webmasters, as thats who actually knows about alexa, and who uses it the most. Ive been using This great site to boost my ranking, and ive gone up hundreds of thousands in about a week. But Im not 100% sure this site is why. Just curious. thanks
I was ranking was normal and consistent great until my web site was down for 1 day because a particular ip. address was hitting my site over and over. It was like I had 500,000 page views and my stats went through the roof with a 700% increase. Ever since then I have been having a 110 increase in traffic however my Alexa standing shows we have dropped huge by over 1.5 million. I reported this IP address to the appropriate Service provider and they said that they are aware of this IP address and they warned them if it happens again they would be disconnected from their server permanently. So this is why I question the credibility of Alexa and other ranking services. All we are doing is growing and none of our stats reflect this. Alexa should have picked up on this. Since then I no longer look to Alexa as an authority. I have contacted them about this twice and no answer. Can Alexa be manipulated? If anyone else is having this problem please share.

Please, i need some help with the alexa rank. I just create new Blog and i am taking a alexa rank of 16. What am i doing wrong?
Very interesting info, but I bet almost every webpage traffic stats counter is setup to show number of hits rather than unique visits to people who visit the page.
I guess all those bogus visits look impressive to visitors even though its very deceiving".
The useful part of my traffic logs is the referer section where I can see where visitors have come from,I love this feature and its without a doubt the most useful part of my traffic logs.

Search Engine Marketing
Good Morning!
I do not know if this is the right place here to post my question in Alexa.
Our website http://www.marksmotos.com has only 1 linking which is the 68 classifieds. I just want to know if the "links" here in alexa is the same as in www.linkpopularity.com ?
thanks
grace
From my company's experience, I have to believe that the Alexa rankings are highly misleading at best, and pure fiction at worst. Here's why I say this:
Our company owns several internet properties. I'll compare two for the sake of this argument:
The first site is The Business Market. This is an established site and internally-logged traffic for this site is about 50,000 sessions per month. The traffic remains very steady from day to day and month to month.
However, our Alexa rank for The Business Market fluctuates wildly. One week it is 312,000, the next week it is 202,000 and the next week it is 450,000. How in the world can it fluctuate so much when our traffic remains consistent?
One of our other sites is The Franchise Market. Unlike The Business Market, this site is currently under construction and has no standing in SERP results and no traffic. However, just by having two employees visiting the site while developing it, our Alexa rank went from 2,800,000 all the way up to a one-week average of 450,000. This rivals The Business Market's ranking at times, even though traffic to the site is only a couple hundred sessions a month, at most.
Due to other programming requirements, we have not touched the site for two weeks. As a result, the Alexa ranking is back down to 2,800,000. If our visits (which are all from the same IP address) can distort the Alexa ranking that much, how accurate can that number really be?
Like I said, in my opinion the Alexa ranking is misleading at best, and totally useless at worst.
