Excellent article. Receiving traffic is important and also having the right niche. A lot of bloggers fail, not because they don't have excellent content, but because no body knows it exists! On my blog I've realzed that I get an average of one ad click per thousand unique visitors.

This is fairly bad but it's no doubt due to the ad network I'm using and the ads not fitting up with my niche. Either way, there is a lot of money in blogging and subsequent advertising. This was a great article. Keep up the good work! :)

interesting article, but a bit oversimplified. A lot depends upon the sector you're in, too. Entertainment news and celeb gossip sites ranked at 13,000 on Alexa are typically making $10,000 or more per month.

I know of one entertainment news blog in particular that is Alexa-ranked at 18,000 and is making over $5000 per month.

Mind you, many of them are not "technically" blogs - they're full on news sites.

Plus entertainment news and celebrity gossip is a popular field.

And most of those sites have been signed with advertising representation companies who actually run pre-sold campaigns on sites, too...like Gorilla Nation, for example. Mind you, such companies can be hard to sign with. You typically need to already have good traffic and/or demonstrate significant potential in their eyes.

Think we will have to go down the display advertising route although it usually goes hand in hand with traffic etc

A good tip is to hit a niche, you have a much better chance of dominating or doing midly well if you slip into something people are actively searching for

Great article, does realy make one think. As mentioned in one of the comments, there are other forms of advertising which make good money. You have to be smart. I don't think the Impression Ads pay alot. But there is a place for them. If your are good you can use these cheap ads to bring people to your site. Then it is up to you how you make money.

Good article to make one think. As mentioned in one of the comments, the impressions pay out is low. But you can use the impressions ads to your advantage. Buy cheap ads. You should know how to write these ads. Bring people to your site. And know how to sell. Use other advertising to generate an income, sell products, adsense etc.

Interesting post. I'm assuming that $.61 is just an average. The Internet is heavy with low-quality content & traffic. The successful blogger can find much more lucrative advertising opportunities in a valuable niche, especially by selling ads directly to targetted advertisers.

Absolutely in agreement. Ultimately the most profitable bloggers will be those who have their own products and services targetted to their readership. You don't even need a plumbing business though - digital commerce opens up many options, from premium site memberships to ebooks or online consulting services.

Great post. I agree that people definitely need to focus on more than just advertising. Especially if it is only adsense etc.

Once your site gets to a level where it is bringing in large amounts of traffic you can always offer banner ads and charge your own monthly fee for people to advertise on your site. Why get paid $1 or even $10 from Google if you could charge $260 (for example) a month that goes directly to you!

Heather at dooce.com and people like ProBlogger (Darren Rowse) and tech crunch etc all charge to advertise. Heather runs a personal blog that I have been told earns $40,000 a month from advertising.
It didn't happen overnight though, that is the thing to remember. These experienced guys have been blogging it for 5-6 years.

It can happen. You just need a plan to decide what will work for you.

I use mine to sell affiliate products. They bring in an income. Plus I give away free stuff that has links to products included and I give them away from my blog.

Adsense is a direct way to make money from your blog but there are loads of indirect ways and for people who don't have their own product affiliate marketing is probably the best one.

Selling information products is another.

I have researched it all and have my plan ready for 2012. By then I will be making 5 figures from my blog. I could never say that about my job or even since being self employed. Blogging will do it.

You just need to learn how to get your piece of the pie!!!!

And of course you need to do the work required to succeed.

Well informative report; or should I say blog post. I wanted to add a bit more information that your readers may want to know about this topic.

Not all ads come in per thousand impressions pay out. With Google Adsense, for instance, you can have pay per click ads that can pay from 0.01 cent per click to $xx.xx figures. Sometimes one click can earn you more than $10 while a few others add up to that much.

Basically, even slow traffic blog sites can get a few hundred dollars if their keywords and SEO is done right. Furthermore, smart bloggers found ways to get visitors by advertising with low charging (0.01 cent adwords charges) keywords and including high paying adsense keywords in their blog; i.e bring in a 1 cent visitor and have him/her click on a $1 ad link.

I forgot this was a comment. Blogging is profitable, but only if you know what you're doing with it.
