Alexa Increases its Global Traffic Panel

2 minute read

We’re excited to announce that after a lot of hard work, the size of Alexa’s global traffic panel will be significantly increasing. Over the next month we’ll be incorporating lots of new data points, which will help improve the accuracy of our metrics. As a reminder, our data panel is a sample of global Internet traffic used to calculate Alexa ranks and estimate non-Certified metrics.

Fantastic – now what does this mean for me?

A bigger data sample with more robust global traffic coverage means we can make better estimates, translating into more accurate rankings, traffic metrics, and actionable recommendations. With better data, we’ll be able to offer deeper insights into your site, your competitors’ site and overall traffic strategy. One immediate result of the additional data is that you may see your traffic rank fluctuate, especially for sites ranked greater than 100,000.

I’m a data nerd – can you tell me a little more about how Alexa measures web traffic?

Don’t worry – you are in good company, we like to geek out over the data too. As one of the global pioneers in web analytics, we have been measuring and estimating traffic data for almost 20 years (i.e. – before Google was even founded!). During that time, we’ve fine-tuned our methodologies to provide you with the most accurate metrics possible.

As we mentioned above, our traffic estimates are based on data from our global panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of many different browser extensions. However, we don’t just rely on browser extensions. We also gather much of our traffic data from direct sources, including sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script and certify their metrics.  It is this unique combination of data from our global panel, plus data from directly measured sources, filtered through our advanced statistical models that allow us to provide you with robust and comprehensive metrics.

We know that you rely on Alexa’s insights to make smart, informed decisions to help grow your business. And so we promise to continue growing our panel and optimizing our methodologies to ensure we provide you with data and recommendations you can trust.

Great to hear, Leigh – a(nother) good way of cross-validating your data would be to harness the traffic flows of existing high-volume hit-counter widgets, because they are widely distributed and provide valuable triangulation and calibration points for your other data. You undoubtedly do this already to some extent, but there are some other possibilities that you may not have deployed. Please see my email re ‘Cross-validation stats for your expanded panel’ sent to you about 4 hours ago. Many thanks!
